Swiss Air Force and ARFF Driving Academy conduct world’s first ARFF hybrid driver training

Nov 5, 2023 | News 2023

The ARFF Driving Academy and the CFR Campus Phénix of the Swiss Air Force, led by Lt Col Hans Schmid, have successfully completed the first development phase of ARFF driver training with an innovative hybrid approach in a practical test! 🚒🔥

The ARFF Driving Academy (ARFFDA) is proud to introduce a groundbreaking approach in the context of the ARFF 411 Safe Efficiency driver training program, in collaboration with the CFR Campus (Crash & Fire Rescue / Fire Training Center) of the Swiss Air Force. The initial development phase for this revolutionary hybrid concept has been successfully completed, and the partners have conducted the first practical test as part of a pilot training.

🌍 Sustainability at the Forefront: In today’s world, environmental protection is a top priority. The hybrid training approach, built on existing simulator technology, has undergone careful development and is ready for deployment. The project aims to achieve a significant reduction in emissions, fuel consumption, and wear and tear on ARFF vehicles during driver training. The stated goal is to make a substantial contribution to a greener and more sustainable future for ARFF training methods.

🚗 Perfecting Practical Training: Training methods have evolved to a new level of efficiency. Participants now have the opportunity to develop in a controlled virtual environment and utilize existing simulator technology to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills, effectively preparing for the challenging driving tasks of ARFFDA with real vehicles.

🌟 New Possibilities: The use of simulator technology offers expanded training options. Functions such as replay and bird’s-eye view can be employed for training purposes.

📈 Seamless Integration and Maximum Flexibility: The hybrid training approach seamlessly integrates existing simulator technology into ARFF 411 driver training. The learning objectives set by ARFFDA remain the same for both hybrid and non-hybrid training. This allows training coordinators to choose between hybrid and non-hybrid training as needed and available.

🚦 Validation and Guidance by ARFFDA Instructors: All actions and maneuvers trained in the simulator are validated in practice. The experienced ARFFDA instructors carefully monitor the simulation’s behavior to ensure that real conditions are accurately reflected during training. Simulation is used to cover training content where the simulator adds value and significantly reduces vehicle usage.
